Cameron Herbert Leader Spotlight

Cameron Herbert

How long have you lived in Long Beach?

Since 2005

How long have you been involved with HLB?

A little over a year

Who is your role model?

My mom-as hard as times are she knows that through God it’s going to be ok. I try to be like that every single day. She is focused, determined and whatever comes her way she faces it with courage.

What do you want to change about Long Beach?

I would love to see less homeless people in Long Beach.

When did your passion for social justice come alive?

It didn’t come alive until I came here to be honest. I never thought I would be volunteering with a nonprofit organization.  I wouldn’t be here if not for my church, The Rock. I’ve learned from my church that if you love your community you should be a part of making it better.  It’s very satisfying to feel like I may have had an impact on people in my city.

How have you grown through your involvement with HLB?

I have become a stronger leader. I have a better understanding about how city government works. Also it’s great to have the opportunity to be around such strong leaders and staff. Being around those people helps me become a more mature person and hence a better leader.

What skill has been most useful for you to learn?CameronYelling

I have learned how to get a crowd motivated for an action. I have learned to be energetic while I am leading the crowd and now I know the right things to say to get them equally as excited. I’ve always had a lot of energy but now I know how to use it to my advantage.

What kind of work do you do with HLB?

I do pretty much anything that they need me to do-from speaking to doing manual labor.  Phone banking, leg visits, putting together a desk (yes I have done that), getting a crowd excited and speaking and attending city council meetings. I can do it all.

What is your favorite memory with HLB?

My favorite memory is one of our direct actions-when we went to a councilmember’s office. We were trying to get our point across that he needed to make a serious decision and since he wouldn’t listen to us any other way we chose to take back the power.  I like action oriented groups.  If we don’t have to take it to that level that would be great but unfortunately sometimes we have to take other actions to get our point across.

How has your involvement impacted the city of Long Beach?

It has a big effect on Long Beach. A whole lot more people know about HLB. After our last campaign more people recognize us. I’m glad to be a part of a bigger organization that is making an impact on the city.
